As by now you will be aware, there are many different applications for promotional products; they are not just used as ‘give-aways’ or for trade shows. Understanding all the various applications that can be employed will open up further windows of opportunity for your business.
Promotional items primarily used for advertising
Everywhere you look you will see items that are printed or engraved with someone’s name. The list is endless, key rings, mugs, mouse mats, fridge magnets and so on. These items will have been given to you by maybe a business you visit, they may have been sent through the post and you might have received them at a trade fair or business open day. You might even have received them from a ‘Street Team’, people who are employed just to hand out freebies to passers-by in such as town centres. This marketing medium not only builds recognition of a business but is also a way to gain your loyalty by means of repeat business.
Corporate Gifts
Although many of the foregoing items will feature as business/corporate gifts, more expensive items will often be considered in this category. Popular choices are polo shirts, conference bags, clocks, glass paperweights, bottles of champagne and many more. The choices are, in fact, endless. They are usually sent to clients and suppliers of a business to express appreciation and gratitude for their loyalty and, in the case of suppliers, good service. They will often be sent around holiday times, Christmas being one of the busiest seasons, Sometimes employees will receive a gift as a thank you for hard work and also developing business is often targeted.
Premiums
Premiums are the accepted term to describe items that are not free but the customer isn’t paying for either. For example, have you ever been enticed into applying for a credit card when there has been the inducement of, say, a free DVD machine? Joined a book club in order to receive your initial choices at a fraction of the normal price. Signed up for a mail-order catalogue that is offering a free gift with your first order? Many of these inducements are not actually given until certain criteria is fulfilled, for example no free mail order gift without placing that all important initial order. So you can see, attaching a premium is a clever way to gain new customers.
Recognition Awards
This type of award is usually confined to the company workforce. Incentives can range from badges and plaques to many other more practical gifts, such as leisure ware, hampers and so on. They can be awarded for many reasons, excellent performance, perfect attendance, for exceeding targets, for performance beyond the call of duty, years of service and much more. Whilst the award may not have a great value, it is considered that it will act as an incentive to others to strive harder in order to attain one of these sought after prizes.
Other applications for awards
Sometimes, promotional items are given to customers at events. On a par with recognition awards they are usually smaller gifts and given to customers on a random basis. Maybe when offering a big prize in a competition, the first 50 or so runners up will be promised a t-shirt or promotional mug. Also, items like balloons are very popular and a good way to promote your business being particularly popular for children when attending fairs. Many businesses, such as football clubs, have their own gift shops, which offer a variety of products with the company logo. Although they are promotional items they are perceived as souvenirs and enthusiastically purchased by customers.
